The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 4 -6, 1976 A Red Letter Day

Wednesday, February 4, 1976

 

Cloudy. I got my clothes in. Cleaned up the house. Betty had the coffee group at her house this a.m. Bill fishing again. Billie took Billie D to town after work. Walt to a meeting up to Augusta today. Wind blowed so hard this evening.

 

 

 

Thursday, February 5, 1976 Carmen 13 years old, 10 above this morning, (DOROTHEA DIVORCED DAVID TODAY)

 

Well it was a pretty good day. I was up early today and got ready and Betty came after me about 6:30. I went down there and she got ready and went to Westbrook to go to court with Dorothea to get her divorce from David. She got it all okay. Then Betty got home at about noon, she took Delores and me to town then she went and took Lloyd. Bill went to the doctors again this morning. He has got to go again tomorrow for a urine test. I did a wash and finished my housework. Bill went to town and paid the bills. Carmen got quite a lot of birthday cards. CARMEN BECAME A TEENAGER.

 

 

 

Friday, February 6, 1976

 

Kind of cloudy. I done up my work. Went down with Bill to see Zak’s new book. I came home, washed a dite of things, did a dite of ironing, washed windows, floor and a few other jobs. In early p.m. I went up with Betty to get milk and butter. Bill to the Dr. for a checkup. Mrs. Hutchinson, the nurse called. Zak came up after school to stay for supper and all night.
