The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 27 - 30, 1976

Tuesday, January 27, 1976 Billie had x-ray, RAIN, 40 to 45° temperature

 

It has rained all day. No school. I finished looking at the coronas. Went down to Betty’s a little while. Kids all there. Billie down to the NCM Hospital here in Bridgton and had x-rays. Hope they don’t find anything serious. Very hazardous traveling. Walt got hung up out here in the road this morning. Got a letter and snaps from Esther.

 

 

 

Wednesday, January 28, 1976 RAIN all day

 

 

Another very miserable day. Rain, foggy and cloudy. I looked at rest of magazines. There wasn’t school today. Betty took Dorothea’s car back to her. Monica came home last night from the hospital, poor kid.  Chris had an earache.

 

 

 

Thursday, January 29, 1976 nice day

 

I done some washing. Betty took Lloyd and Delores to town. Lloyd went to the doctors for a checkup. Nerves. Clothes dried quite good. Bill and Ilan went fishing a little while.

 

 

 

Friday, January 30, 1976

 

A nice day, not too cold either. Betty and I got ready and went down to Sebago and picked up Dawn and went to North Conway and done grocery shopping. Also got a few things at Ames. Came home, had a chicken supper. I got the chicken at Shaw’s. Billie up to Chet’s tonight. He is doing okay.
