The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 5 - 8, 1976 New Tractor

Monday, April 5, 1976 A quite nice day, Carmen back-to-school

On the windy side, but sunny. The snow nearly all gone now. I got ready, figured out the bills and then Betty and I went up to Ames and finished Kimmy’s birthday shopping. Also went to Shaw’s at the shopping center. Came home dead broke. Carmen got sick at school. Bill went after her after supper. Betty, Kim and I called at Fern and Lloyd’s. Kimmy took them down some gingerbread and whipped cream she made, it was delicious.

Tuesday, April 6, 1976 TRACTOR CAME

A very nice sunny day. I did a big wash. About 10:30 the new tractor came and the other one went. This one has a shovel on it or loader. A Massey-Ferguson. In p.m. I went down to Betty’s, we cleaned her shed chamber. Bill down town all a.m. trying to get his car fixed. In evening Betty, Walt and Zak came to see the tractor.

Wednesday, April 7, 1976

A nice day. I have been busy ever since I got out of bed. I done up regular work, down to Betty’s a little while. I did a wash and an extra big ironing. I prepared my supper, went down to Fern’s in p.m. with Betty. We cleaned her cellar and cellar way. I came home, got my clothes in and folded, mended. Looked at rest of the magazine’s. Kim came up in evening, brought up a delicious chocolate cake and whipped cream. Bill raked this p.m. Billie after supper. Betty to coffee group in a.m. It has been a nice day, on the cool side.

Thursday, April 8, 1976 sunny and nice, on the cool side

A frost when we got up this morning. I done regular work, ironed. We went down to Fern’s and got her closets done. Bill took his car to McDonald Motors and got it fix. Hope it don’t wear the tires anymore. Kimmy came home from school with a sore throat and a bad cold tonight. Betty went and done Lloyd’s shopping, also Delores went with her.
