The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, April 10, 1976 KIM TO NORTHERN CUMBERLAND HOSPITAL, DEMING’S CAME HOME

Kimmy was sick all night and in the early morning hours she got real bad, wheezing hard for her to breath, asthma. Bill went down to tell them about her being sick. Betty called the hospital, they told her to bring her down to emergency which she did. They gave her intravenous fluids, oxygen, medication which made her very sick. Bill and I went down in p.m. She was a little more relaxed Esther and Cliff arrived home at about 1 PM. They were very glad to get home. Susan and the kids were there with Billie to welcome them. Bill and I called a little while. I took a cake, cookies and dozen eggs to them. I have been busy all day, done regular work, made pies, cookies, cake, bread and baked beans. Washed, ironed, cleaned things up, washed floor, down after groceries and up to see Kim. Called at Es. Billie went with Lawrence. Walt’s brother Ray and wife came.

This is supposed to be the day for the celebration of Kim’s 10th birthday. Walt’s brother and wife stayed all night last night. Carmen and Ray went over to North Bridgton the play tennis. Walt and Ray called to see Kim. Carmen, Patty and Betty down to see her last night. Kim called me and Betty this morning. She didn’t sound very good and when Walt and Ray were down, she wasn’t as good, getting sick again. It has been very cold and snow flurries. Dorothea and David came up and brought a cake up.
