The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Finished mowing lawns. Billie had Paul Hodsdon help him get the hay up to Bob’s. Dorothea home for tonight and tomorrow. Milan’s folks came in the night from a trip to northern Maine.



Friday, August 6, 1954

I washed, iron. Milan folks took kids off riding in the boats and a plane. Also they went horseback riding. Clear and nice today.



Saturday, August 7, 1954

Pretty good day. Went to town in p.m. Kennard up for supper and Milan’s folks.



Sunday, August 8, 1954

Milan’s folks left for home at 6 this morning. I had a nice birthday. Got $5 in money, oilcloth for table, pantyhose and a box of chocolates (very good), also a nice steam iron and cards.

July 29 - August 2, 1954 Dorothea's Birthday and Betty Returns

Milan’s folks came this morning. Mrs. Cox came over here today. We had a birthday cake and ice cream for Dorothea tonight. Raymond, Fern, Lloyd, Milan’s folks and Mrs. Cox here. She got a lot of nice gifts.



Friday, July 30, 1954

Still getting ready for Betty. She got her parakeet tonight at Waltham Massachusetts. Milan took me to town.



Saturday, July 31, 1954

A nice day except for a bad shower in p.m. Brud, Verna, Betty and Nola Raye got here about 11 AM. She was pleased to get here, had a very good time up there. Brud’s family and Kennard here also Milan’s family and Mrs. Cox here for dinner and supper. Dolores came up a little while.



Sunday, August 1, 1954

Milan and Betty went fishing today. Billie, Milan, Norma, Betty and I over to see the bulls at Brownfield. Brud and Verna called in p.m. on way home.

Friday, July 23, 1954

Cloudy and showers. Dorothea here all day, we washed, ironed and cleaned up the house. Lil called in p.m. Billie sold three heifer’s tonight to Elmer Fogg. Bill awful lame. Paid Herbert for the haying $81 had credit of $21.



Saturday, July 24, 1954

Nice day. Fern went to town with us. Bill getting lamer.



Sunday, July 25, 1954

Rained and cloudy. Bill very lame. Billie mowed lawns. Worked in the garden.



Monday, July 26, 1954

Fair most of the day. I washed. Bill not able to go to work. Fern and Lloyd came up.



Tuesday, July 27, 1954

Iron. Cloudy and showers. Took Betty’s bike down tonight. Kennard took it down in his truck. Billie’s two bull calves went tonight. Horace Flint bought them. Dr. came to see Bill. He was very bad this morning.



Wednesday, July 28, 1954

Rained all day, beginning about noon. Dr. here to see Bill. We put four boxes of peas into deep freeze. Dr. came again today.

July 15 - 22, 1954 Mama's Birthday

Finished mowing lawns. Washed, made some cream puffs, did regular work. Mama over to Aunt Ava’s for the day and supper. Pat and Ervin (Linscott) had an 8 lbs. 6 oz. baby girl today. Mama 74 today!



Friday, July 16, 1954

Clear, cool and windy. Mama came home from Aunt Ava’s tonight. Lloyd finished the flagpole. Hauled home another load of hay from Roberts.



Saturday, July 17, 1954

Went to town in p.m. Fern went with us. Very good day. Betty and Susan sent Mama a picture for her birthday.

They hayed up to Bob’s. Got all cleaned up what was mowed down.



Monday, July 19, 1954

Washed.



Tuesday, July 20, 1954

I ironed. Quite warm. Got a letter and picture from Betty today.

Rained. Billie home, has a lame back.



Thursday, July 22, 1954

Nice day. Worked in the garden. Fern and Lloyd up in evening. Bill didn’t get home ‘til awful late.

Mowed lawns, worked in garden. Bill and Billie down to Herbert’s to help hay tonight. Dorothea came up a few minutes, a very nice day. Kail went home.



Friday, July 9, 1954

Cloudy, some light showers. I finished up the garden. Cleaned up the house. Brud and Verna and Nola Raye called in p.m.



Saturday, July 10, 1954

Herbert began mowing today. Rita came up at noon and got him. A wonderful day.

I washed, we churned. Betty left today for Massachusetts with Brud, Verna and Nola Raye to visit.

Billie home and they got in five loads of hay.

Quite hot. Mowed some lawns. Holly helped. She was here for supper. Dorothea here too. Got a shower. Herbert raked up the scattering’s. Got our first letter from Betty today.
