The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 2 - 8, 1954



Tuesday, March 2, 1954

Cleared off nice today. I got in the clothes and ironed. Took Donnie down and got his haircuts. Took him in to get shoes fixed. Lloyd took me down. Kennard worked for Lucas Tree. Dorothea didn’t go to school because of snow.



Wednesday, March 3, 1954

Cooked. Nice day. Colder.



Thursday, March 4, 1954

Didn’t do much. Cold. Billie cut limbs and trimmed the trees out here in yard.



Friday, March 5, 1954

Cooked. Did regular work. Nice day. Cold. Betty, Billie and I up to Bob’s to see TV in evening. Donnie better.



Saturday, March 6, 1954

Cold. Did work. Cooked. Went to town, got a bag of grain. Betty up to Bob’s to see TV in p.m. Billie up to Aunt Ava’s to get pine boughs. Been a lot of snow in Cleveland, over 20 inches. Raymond called in evening also Wayne and Philip Allen. Donnie better.



Sunday, March 7, 1954

Nice day, warmer. Did work, got dinner. Bill, Billie, Donnie and I here alone all day. Mama and Betty came home this p.m. Fern, Lloyd, Bob, Blanche and Bobby Hatch called. Donnie is okay now.



Monday, March 8, 1954

Wash. Nice day, cold. Got clothes in. Billie over to Raymond’s shop in p.m. Ava Grover and Evie McKeen called. Billie went to lodge with Raymond. Bill came home lame. Went over to Dr. Newth.
