The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 29 - June 2, 1954 Memorial Weekend And a Big Surprise!

Saturday, May 29, 1954

Very nice day. Bill had to go to work early this morning. They did spraying with the planes. He had to go up to help direct traffic. Billie worked. In p.m. Bill and I went downtown and bought the new rug. Painted the dining room floor. A very bad rain at night. Some lightning and showers. Kennie and Raymond upcountry to go fishing.

Sunday, May 30, 1954 Memorial Day

Nice day but windy. Mama and Betty up to Waterford and Stoneham with Aunt  Ava and Uncle Lewis. Bill and I went down to the cemetery. I washed and cooked. Robert laid the new kitchen rug.

Monday, May 31, 1954

A nice day, windy. Vernie harrowed the garden. Rita called. Bill went early this morning but it was too windy and they couldn’t spray so came back. Virgins and two grandchildren called today. Billie put on the screens.

Tuesday, June 1, 1954

Been warmer. Cooked. Trimmed the grass, washed grain room floor and porch. Showers tonight. Dorothea leaves for home tonight from Ohio.

Wednesday, June 2, 1954

A big surprise today, Esther and Susan came with Dorothea. Dorothea was so pleased to get home. It rained all day and showers. I had my hair cut and set today.
