The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 27 - July 2, 1954 Betty's First Job



Sunday, June 27, 1954

Cloudy. Some thunder. I finished planting. Planted shell beans and string beans. Ilan helping Billie to put up hay fork. Dorothea wrote letter. She goes to camp tonight for the summer.



Monday, June 28, 1954 Betty’s First Paying Job

Wash today, not a very good day. Betty worked over to Jim’s, she earned $1.10. First day she ever worked out. Fern Lloyd (she never finished her sentence).



Tuesday, June 29, 1954

Rained. I ironed. Kennard and Billie hauled hay. Billie didn’t work.



Wednesday, June 30, 1954

Left chickens out tonight for first time. Rained. Billie didn’t feel very good.



Thursday, July 1, 1954

Mowed lawns. Kail here today. Betty worked over to Jim’s. Raymond called in evening.



Friday, July 2, 1954

Cleared off nice. Kail, Betty and I mowed lawns. Vance Dearborn and Caleb called to see Bill. Bill and I over to doctors in evening and down to Dorothea’s. Kennard came up. Billie put on some awnings. Betty worked over to Jim’s.
