The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 20 - 23, 1967

Wednesday, December 20, 1967

I done regular work, figured bills. Went to town with Lloyd. Took my dress back and the light Billie got for back porch. I got some things to make my fudge. I came home, made fudge, ironed. In evening Billie and I to town and got a few things. Been thinking of Kennie. He went to hospital a year ago today. Billie got me a new wastebasket.



Thursday, December 21, 1967 Kennie gone one year

Been thinking of Kennie, he has been gone one year today. We miss him so much here. He is happy and out of this mixed up world and is now where everything is quite beautiful and peaceful. We all love you Kennie. I washed windows, cleaned up my house, rest of ceiling tiles came. Colonial Supply came for the old furnace. Lloyd called. Talked with Betty and Carmen.



Friday, December 22, 1967

I went to town with Lloyd in a.m. I did quite a lot of errands. Got my groceries. Came home, cooked, cleaned up the house. Took a bath, and got the gifts onto the tree. About 4:30 the Horton family arrived. Everyone glad to see each other. Those girls of Betty’s are the sweetest bunch of flesh. We didn’t get to bed very early. After supper Billie, Walt, Betty, Fern and I and Carmen called at the Thomases in Westbrook.



Saturday, December 23, 1967

Snowing this morning. Bill had to go sanding for a few hours. Betty rearranged the gifts under the tree and cleaned up the house. Bill worked on the tile. Billie downtown in p.m. Buster Allen came, got a lot done on the bathroom. Bill got a lot of the kitchen ceiling up.

December 16 - 19, 1967


Saturday, December 16, 1967 Carlton came, Windy

A beautiful day but still windy after heavy winds blew last night. The moon was bright and very pretty shining on the icy crusty snow all night. I wrapped more gifts. Today Carlton came to visit Ken and Dolores. Billie and I to town in p.m. shopping.



Sunday, December 17, 1967

A beautiful day but awful windy cold. I did up my work. Gordon came in middle of forenoon and they worked in the bathroom and kitchen ceiling. Dorothea and Jeff came. Dorothea did some baking. She and I called at Lorraine’s, no one home.



Monday, December 18, 1967

Cloudy. I done up my work, went to Norway with Barbara Stanford. Came home, done some odd jobs. A dite of cooking. I called Betty. Gordon up tonight and done some work, he and Bill. Billie and I called at Bob’s, Aunt Ava’s. Billie called at Chet’s.



Tuesday, December 19, 1967

I done my washing, wind blowed awful hard. It was mild. Clothes dried good. I got them in. I been writing letters, wrote three. Sent for Ferns stickers Dorothea gave her. Carlton went back last night. Ken and Dolores called after supper.

December 12 - 15, 1967


Tuesday, December 12, 1967 Rain

When we got up this morning it was raining so awful hard. We decided not to come to Maine. We didn’t do much. Betty did a big ironing. Kim fussy all day. Carmen watched TV. At noon we decided to go to Manchester in evening. We went, Carmen and Kim saw Santa. Carmen sat on his lap. We did some shopping at night. Very icy roads in Bridgton Maine. They said the town crew worked all night.



Wednesday, December 13, 1967

Got up this morning, Sun is shining very good. We got up, flew around. I got Kim and Carmen’s breakfast. Betty took Walt to work. At five minutes after 9 AM we left for home. Got here at about 11:45. Dorothea was here. Billie home sick with flu. Betty and kids left to go back about one, got home at 3:30.



Thursday, December 14, 1967 Nice day

A nice sunny day, not too cold, windy. I washed, went down town with Ken and Dolores. Got a bunch of Christmas cards off, got rest of them ready to go. It is good to be home. I did a dite of shopping this morning.



Friday, December 15, 1967 Windy

A beautiful day, but very cold and awful winds. I went to Norway in a.m. to order ceiling material. Came home and I wrapped some gifts. In evening Billie and I went to Norway and S. Paris to do Billie’s shopping. Fern went with us. I went over in a.m. with Fern and Lloyd. Fern stopped in, we had or they had coffee, donuts and looked the gifts over.

December 8 - 11, 1967


Friday, December 8, 1967 Snow and Rain

I called Betty this morning. Gordon came, he worked in the kitchen. A miserable day. Gordon got the other cupboards started in the kitchen. Bill had to work after supper. Billie took me to town. Gordon came back after supper, they moved the other furnace up.



Saturday, December 9, 1967 Linda Johnson married in the White House today, her father is President

Partly cloudy in a.m. Bill and I went to Norway and got the tile for the bathroom. Betty and Walt and kids came about 3:30. Fern up for supper. Fern and Lloyd up in a.m. Billie worked for Lawrence in a.m., in p.m. they went down country cattle buying. Linda Johnson, the President’s daughter, married today in the White House.



Sunday, December 10, 1967

Up early, got dinner. May preparations and plans to go back with Betty and Walt. We ate, did dishes and left about 3:30 or four. Called at Dorothea and Dave’s. Got up to Betty and Walt’s about seven.



Monday, December 11, 1967 in Concord New Hampshire at Betty and Walt, Carmen and Kim’s

Woke up and had a stomach ache. It was necessary to go to the bathroom many times during the day. We decided not to try to go shopping. It was cloudy and misty all day up here. Betty washed and went shopping. This evening she and I went. I felt much better. We did a lot of shopping. Betty out grocery shopping early in a.m. A bad ice storm in Maine.

Monday, December 4, 1967

Very cold and windy all night. Awful hard blowing winds all night. I didn’t wash today, too cold and windy. I finished my Christmas cards. Gordon worked on the lavatory in the bathroom. Lloyd called. Bill came home for breakfast.



Tuesday, December 5, 1967 Called at Thomas and Adair’s

A nice day, mild and sunny and warm. I washed. Clothes dried good. Gordon and I went to Norway and down through to Plywood Barn at Windham. Got the tile ordered for bathroom over to Norway. Fern and Lloyd called. I had a good supper. Our last fowl cooked. Billie, Fern and I called at Dorothea, David’s and Jeff’s in evening.



Wednesday, December 6, 1967

A beautiful day. I went to town with Kennard. Got rinse for my hair. Gordon put the finish on the windows. I ironed and cooked a dite. Stanfords called in evening.



Thursday, December 7, 1967 Permanent

Cloudy all day. I got my permanent today. Lloyd took me over. Gordon didn’t do much today, started the other cupboards in kitchen. Didn’t do very much today. Apples came from Sanborn.
