The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A Maine Tree in New Hampshire

Wednesday, December 20, 1967

I done regular work, figured bills. Went to town with Lloyd. Took my dress back and the light Billie got for back porch. I got some things to make my fudge. I came home, made fudge, ironed. In evening Billie and I to town and got a few things. Been thinking of Kennie. He went to hospital a year ago today. Billie got me a new wastebasket.

Thursday, December 21, 1967 Kennie gone one year

Been thinking of Kennie, he has been gone one year today. We miss him so much here. He is happy and out of this mixed up world and is now where everything is quite beautiful and peaceful. We all love you Kennie. I washed windows, cleaned up my house, rest of ceiling tiles came. Colonial Supply came for the old furnace. Lloyd called. Talked with Betty and Carmen.

I went to town with Lloyd in a.m. I did quite a lot of errands. Got my groceries. Came home, cooked, cleaned up the house. Took a bath, and got the gifts onto the tree. About 4:30 the Horton family arrived. Everyone glad to see each other. Those girls of Betty’s are the sweetest bunch of flesh. We didn’t get to bed very early. After supper Billie, Walt, Betty, Fern and I and Carmen called at the Thomases in Westbrook.

Snowing this morning. Bill had to go sanding for a few hours. Betty rearranged the gifts under the tree and cleaned up the house. Bill worked on the tile. Billie downtown in p.m. Buster Allen came, got a lot done on the bathroom. Bill got a lot of the kitchen ceiling up.
