The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 23 - 26, 1967


Saturday, September 23, 1967

Cloudy day. Gordon here, they began to shingle the garage and breezeway. Billie took me to town. We had Kim. I made rolls, pies etc, baked beans. Betty and family here and Fern. Carmen here all day. Betty and Walt packing all day.



Sunday, September 24, 1967 Betty, Walt, Carmen, Kimberly and Heidi MOVED

Cloudy today. I got up early, got my chicken in. Took care of Kim. Betty and Walt up for breakfast. They are getting ready to moved Concord. David came in about 10 AM. Billie went down, they packed the truck and they came up here for dinner and left for East Concord at about 1:30. Walt, Betty, Kimberly and Heidi. Dorothea went too. Fern, Lloyd here in p.m. and for supper. Gordon and Bill finished the shingling. Billie, Dave and Dot got home about 9:30. Jeff here all day.



Monday, September 25, 1967 Cold, Betty called

Very cold and windy all day. I didn’t wash, it was too cold. Gordon up to work. Betty called. I talked with she and Carmen. It was so good to hear their voices. They like very much up there. A guy here to see about Walt’s  car.



Tuesday, September 26, 1967

A nice day. I washed, clothes dried good. Gordon worked on garage, breezeway and finished the shingling of both ends of the house. After supper they put the chimney up to the ceiling in Billie’s room. In evening they put plywood up over breezeway and took boxes etc. down from over house and put over breezeway. I ironed after supper. Lloyd finished first coat of paint.
