The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 15 - 18, 1967






Friday, September 15, 1967 hot

Another nice hot day. I washed, done up my work, cleaned up the house. Gordon worked only half day. But he and Bill worked all evening. Billie took me to town. Betty, Walt, Jeff and Carmen on a camping trip up to Stoneham Maine. I have Kim.



Saturday, September 16, 1967 hot

Cloudy in a.m. It soon cleared and was very hot all day. I went to Charles Virgin’s funeral with Fern, Lloyd, Bob and Dot. We called at Dorothea’s. Wanda Jean took care of Kim. Fern here for supper, also Dorothea and Dave. Bill and Gordon and Billie worked on the garage all day. We have had a perfect week of good weather. Gordon has worked all week. Some chimney material came.



Sunday, September 17, 1967

A beautiful day. Didn’t get up very early. Cooked a roast beef supper. Betty, Walt and kids home from their camping trip. Had a very good time and good weather. Dorothea and Dave came up to get Jeff. The Stanfords called.



Monday, September 18, 1967

A very nice day. I did my wash. Kim still here. Gordon working on garage and breezeway. Sal called. Betty up a little while.
