The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Cloudy. I got up, got Bill and Billie off to work. Gordon came to check on the furnace. It was so hot last night. I got my work done up, took a bath and got ready to go to Betty’s. Got dinner. Bill ate then he got ready and we left about 1 PM. Get to Betty and Walt’s about 3:30 PM. Their house looks so nice and clean and shiny. Bill is so pleased. We had a delicious supper of beans etc. Went up town after supper and watched TV.

Sunday, October 15, 1967 First visit to Betty and Walt’s

We woke up this morning at Betty and Walt in a nice pretty room and a nice clean bed with pretty blanks. Kim is so cute. Betty and I took a walk up to Gunn’s horse farm. It is beautiful up there. Bill and Walt fixed the pump. We were going to ride around. Carmen rode on the pony. We had a delicious dinner of roast pork, mashed potatoes, turnip, cranberry sauce etc. We left for home about five. Got home up at eight.  A very nice weekend.

A cloudy cold dreary day. I didn’t wash. I checked over some boxes etc. Watched programs in p.m. Gordon didn’t work. Lloyd called a minute. After supper Bill and I called at Dorothea, Dave’s and Jeff’s. Dorothea is sick. I sure hope she gets straightened out and better soon. Jeff is doing real well in school.
