The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Cloudy windy day. On the very cold side. I done up my regular work. Billie mowed for Lawrence. Bill got  most of the shingling done on the backside of the house. Betty and family here. Fern, Lloyd, Joy and family, Bob and Norman and Barbara Stanford.

A beautiful day, sunny and much warmer. Bill finished the shingling on the backside of the house. Also got the vents in. Billie and Norman Stanford went up to Stoneham looking for pullets for Norm. Betty, Walt and kids came, left Kim and went to Dorothea’s in p.m. Dorothea and family called. Betty and Dorothea’s family had lunch. Betty left the kids.

David, Carmen and Jeff

Tuesday, September 5, 1967

I have the kids. Betty up to Concord. They couldn’t find a place anywhere. It is quite discouraging. They looked all up through and from Concord New Hampshire line and into Maine. I washed. Gordon came up in p.m. and worked on the porch.

Wednesday, September 6, 1967 a beautiful day, School

School began today. Betty came up. We went down to Dorothea’s, from there we went to Westbrook, Gorham and all around looking for a place. Dorothea went with us. She showed us the house they are interested in. Jeff back-to-school today. Gordon didn’t come up. They took Vickie to Gordon College in Massachusetts. I enjoyed the ride with Dorothea and Betty.
