The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 10 - 13, 1967


Friday, November 10, 1967


A beautiful day. I done up my work, housework. Worked at my desk. Pat Linscott here in p.m. I watched some programs. Bill had a raise from $77.86 to $83.69. $14.31 out for Social Security and income tax.


Saturday, November 11, 1967 Pig gone, 250 pound dressed


Cloudy most all day. Bill and Billie home all day. Billie worked for Lawrence in p.m. He helped to kill his pig and one for Lawrence. Bill and Billie laid some flooring in a.m. Fern and Lloyd called in PM. Bill nailed wallboard and insulated rest of bathroom. Fern up here for supper. Pig dressed 250 pounds.


Sunday, November 12, 1967 Rain



Bill and Billie finished laying the second floors. Dorothea called from down to Dave’s father’s. They came up for supper and evening. Fern and Lloyd called.


Monday, November 13, 1967



A cloudy windy cold day. I washed, the clothes dried quite well. I finished picking over a box of paper receipts etc. Watched programs. Had liver and onions for supper. Bill and Billie finished laying the closet floors.
