The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 30 - December 3, 1967


Thursday, November 30, 1967 Got Blue bathroom fixtures

A beautiful sunny and crisp day. Gordon came early. I had my work all done and we took off for Portland. We went to Colonial Supply, got the bathroom fixtures and bathtub glass enclosure. Also got my light fixtures. Gordon worked in bathroom and got the seat all in running order. Got ready for tub, came back after supper. He and Billie and Bill got it in. Sammy Knights little girl got killed.



Friday, December 1, 1967

I called Betty this morning. All are well and HAPPY. Kim is now on the State of NH Cardiac Fund. Gordon worked in the bathroom all day, got tub all in and walled up. In evening Bill and I went to town. I went to town with Fern and Lloyd in a.m. I started a Christmas CLUB FUND.



Saturday, December 2, 1967 4 above this morning

A beautiful day. I done up my regular work, made a chocolate layer cake, beans and rolls. Gordon worked all day. Fern and Lloyd called. Fern up for supper and evening. Billie worked for Lawrence butchering all day, 28 hogs. Billie took Fern home in evening. Fern, Bill and I watched the TV. Barn dances and Western music. Very good.



Sunday, December 3, 1967 snow and rain, HAMS

It began snowing early this morning and turned to rain about noon. Bill called out to work this morning. We get the hams today. Lawrence brought them from Norway yesterday. I backed Christmas cards. Dorothea, Dave, Jeff here for supper. Dorothea washed. Fern and Lloyd called. Had new ham supper. Bill called out to work in late evening.
