The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 26 - 29, 1967


Saturday, August 26, 1967

A beautiful day. Betty and Walt brought the kids up. They went to Portland to get Betty’s money she got out of the car accident. They brought me a nice box of Fannie Farmer’s chocolates. Good, so good. They and Fern here for supper. Bill’s hands swollen and sore.



Sunday, August 27, 1967

Bill couldn’t do anything, his hand real bad. He soaked it a lot. Lloyd called. Dorothea and Dave came and got Jeff. He didn’t want to go. Jeff and I looked over these cans. Billie came home tonight from his trip to Acton Fair. Had a good time. Betty and Walt came for a little while.



Monday, August 28, 1967

A beautiful day. I did some washing. Lloyd up in a.m. to bring Bill home. He took Walt’s car down to Brock Clark’s. He got ready and we went down and ordered the bathroom fixtures and light fixtures. Called at Dorothea’s and Jeff then stopped to see storms at a store in North Windham to look at (?). Called at Betty’s. Billie away to get a pig. Betty and Walt brought kids up.

Tuesday, August 29, 1967

Very nice day. I washed. Carmen and Kim here. Carmen played with Mark all day. Betty gone to New Hampshire. Tax bill came today. Bill down to Stanford’s to discuss tax bill. Billie down to Lawrence’s. No word from Betty or Walt. Bill to the doctors tonight, his hand is much better. Windows for breezeway came today.
