The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 22 - 25, 1967


Tuesday, August 22, 1967

A very nice day. I washed. On the hot side. Betty and Holly and their kids gone on a picnic. Carmen had such a good time. I washed. Dorothea and Marguerite called and Jeff in PM. They got some plants for Marguerite. Back screen door came. Gordon up tonight. Betty and Walt here in evening. Helen Smart called in a.m.





Wednesday, August 23, 1967 A Beautiful Day

Got up and the sun was shining, clear, cool and bright. I done up my work. Betty called, got to go to Concord to take some papers up. I went with her. A very pretty ride. Saw the house she and Walt want to buy. It is beautiful. Came home late, had car trouble. Bill mad. I got supper, down to Ferns while Billie got his haircut. Carm and Kim up here tonight.



Thursday, August 24, 1967 Billie to Acton Fair, Bet and Walt got a loan today

Sunny and clear this morning. I done up my work, got the kids up. Had breakfast. I cleaned up the house, washed. Dorothea and Jeff called in p.m. Dorothea borrowed my Airways sweeper to do her rug. Betty up to New Hampshire today, went to the monastery with Walt. They got the loan on their house. Joe Hatch up after supper and worked on the driveway. Billie gone to the fair. Bet and Walt came about 8:30. Kids and I called at Stanford’s.



Friday, August 25, 1967 nice day

Another one of those nice days except there was early morning fog which soon disappeared. Joe Hatch and crew came and worked on the driveway and garage. Kids here for a while while Betty was shopping. Joy and family came tonight. Bill hurt his hand tonight.
