The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 21 - 24, 1967


Friday, July 21, 1967

A cloudy hot muggy day. I done up my work. Billie took me to town to do my shopping. Came home and Mrs. Carter was here trying to find Betty. She talked to her. Betty to Norway and Windham. Kim stayed here.



Saturday, July 22, 1967

I had beans and rolls for supper. Betty and Walt and girls here. Carmen and Kim not at all good, both sick with cold and asthma. We went to the races after supper. Es, girls and Billie. Bill didn’t feel good so didn’t work on house.



Sunday, July 23, 1967

A nice day. Bill and Billie did some shingling. Betty, Walt and girls called. That Walt is such a nice person. They went down to Dorothea’s. Es and Billie called. We had a nice roast pork supper. Kim here all night. She, Carmen better. After supper Fern, Lloyd, Es, Susan, Billie, Cathy, Betty, Walt, Carmen and Kim here. Dorothea and David called, had a birthday cake with Dorothea.



Monday, July 24, 1967

A nice day after the fog cleared. I did a big wash. Got ready for a steak cookout. Fern and Esther and family here. Also Betty and children. Had a very nice feed of T-bones. Lawrence Boynton called this morning. Billie working for Lawrence. Bill did some more shingling. Betty and Susan and Cathy to Norway. Betty bought me a new dress to wear to the wedding reception.
