The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 30 - 31, 1964



Wednesday, December 30, 1964

Cloudy. Sleety rain. Well, done up my work. Carmen very sick all day. Had Dr. Bish. Asthmatic bronchitis. Esther up for supper, didn’t stay. She got so upset. I’m so sorry. I don’t know what her trouble is. I worry so about her. Too bad. Bill got a very useful gift from Esther and Fern and Betty.

Thursday, December 31, 1964

Colder, partly cloudy. Some snow flurries. Esther came up. Dolores called. Es and Cliff up in evening. Susan to movies with Tony. Last day of 1964. One event of this past year was my mother’s passing. I miss her so much. Also a dear sister-in-law, Blanche Lorraine Smith. She was a very willing helper in all ways to everyone and anyone, especially in sickness. We miss her so much and loved her. Also our beautiful dog, pretty CHRISTIE. MIKE home for good. TRIP TO SCOTLAND.

No one had to work today, took out our tree. Cloudy, foggy and dismal day. Esther, Cliff and Billie here. Esther helped to take our trees out. Bill, Billie and I down to Fern and Lloyd’s for a good baked beans supper. ????



Sunday, December 27, 1964

Didn’t do much. A sickening day. Foggy and dreary.



Monday, December 28, 1964

Cloudy and snowy. Bill called out again. I did another big wash. Cliff called, Billie up here.



Tuesday, December 29, 1964

A very nice day, got our clothes in. Cleaned up the house. Carmen don’t feel too good. Verna and children called.

Cloudy, foggy, very mild. Esther’s folks arrived at 4 PM from Ohio. They left home yesterday at 12 PM, had a good trip. Here for supper. Fern up for supper. Mike home all day, down to his grandmother’s and had a Christmas party. Got a lot of nice things.

Friday, December 25, 1964 A BIG DAY

Foggy. 40 to 50° temperatures. Esther, Fern, Lloyd and Cliff and Billie arrived here early. Carmen, Mike and Betty’s first Christmas since they were married. All had a nice lot of gifts and a good time. Roast turkey, gravy, shell beans, onions, turnip, celery, a nice salad, mashed potatoes, gravies, rolls, Graham nut bread, butter, pecan pie, whipped cream, suet pudding, cupcakes, ice cream etc. etc. All had very good dinner.

December 20 -23, 1964

Busy all day. Kennie, Dot, Fern, Lloyd and Bob here. Bob brought a turkey over.



Monday, December 21, 1964

Washed all day. What a big one. Couldn’t hang them all out. Jean up after supper. Saw slides. Billie brought home a big turkey.



Tuesday, December 22, 1964

Done cleaning up. Did a dite of cooking. Betty made cookies. A snowy day, no accumulations. Gerard Palmer cleaned out the furnace. Got frozen clothes in.



Wednesday, December 23, 1964

Cloudy and rainy. Today made fudge. Did some cooking. Betty done all the ironing. Deming’s left for Maine. Mike got through tonight till Saturday morning. Billie done some more shopping, brought home another turkey. Got a $50 bonus from the company. Cards from Adairs. D&D going to Florida. Gordon, Sally, Vicki up and saw slides.
