The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 26 - 29, 1964 Thanksgiving

Thursday, November 26, 1964 Thanksgiving Today

Rained good and hard all day. Betty and her family, Mike and Carmen were the only ones here for dinner. Turkey, roast pork, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, gravies. Salad, celery, boiled onions, turnips, shell beans, cranberry sauce, apple sauce, rolls, dark bread, lemon sponge and date filled pies. Whip cream cake, chocolate cake, ice cream and tarts. Dorothea called in evening.

I done up my work. Joy and kids here, Nola here in a.m. and Jeff and Nona in p.m. and Kathy. I looked over some more boxes etc. today. Mike home all day. I washed. Betty's dress came today, very pretty. To town after supper. Ironed when I got home.

Saturday, November 28, 1964

Cloudy day, quite cold. Carmen gone all day. I missed her so much. I have had the most miserable day for a long time. Fern up for supper, began raining in early evening. Brud, Jeff and Nona here in p.m. Bobby worked on the barn.

Sunday, November 29, 1964

Cloudy most all day, rained in a.m. I looked over my boxes. Joy and Bob called and girls. Kennie and Dot. Kennie had sandwiches with us. I had Carmen for an hour or so. She was so pleased to get down here to see us. She means so much to me. Rained hard all night.
