The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 13 - 16, 1964



Tuesday, October 13, 1964

Cold. Cloudy gray day. Been home a week tonight. Today I shampooed my hair, done up my housework. It seems so good to get some work done. I did a little cooking. Joy and children called. Joy to doctors, kids stayed here. I did my ironing in evening. A big one. Betty did hers. She and Mike to bed early.



Wednesday, October 14, 1964

A nice fall day. I done up my work. Got lunch, watched TV, took care of our clothes we used on the trip. In p.m. Betty and I with Carmen went for a ride down to Casco. Came home, took the dahlias up. Got supper. Bill and Billie worked in the new tie up. Kennie, Dot up in evening. Betty and Mike out tonight. They are so happy. Carmen has a new cold. Billie up to Chet’s again tonight to do chores.



Thursday, October 15, 1964

A beautiful day, nice and mild. I done up my work. Took a walk down in the pasture. I was looking for a sheet of tin for them to use in the tie up. In the p.m. Betty, Mike, Carmen, TooMaine and I all took another walked down through the woods to the powerline. Had supper. Betty and I down to Ferns. Betty did Ferns hair. Betty and Mike down to wash. Bill and Billie worked on the barn.



Friday, October 16, 1964

A beautiful day. Joy and girls called. I was punk feeling today. Didn’t go to town tonight. Betty done my shopping for me. Joy and girls called. Holly and her baby called. I done my regular work today. Heifer went today.
