The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 21 - 24, 1964



Wednesday, October 21, 1964

Cloudy. Fern 62 today. Cleared in PM. Fern and Lloyd called. Joy and girls called. Jean and Thena called. Looked over some boxes up in shed chamber. It is very cold here tonight. Lot of snow fall in some near by places last night. Mike put antifreeze in car tonight. Didn’t get the clothes in until today.



Thursday, October 22, 1964

A fair day. I done up my work, looked at the papers this p.m. and evening. Mike called today. He went hunting a little bit. In evening he and Betty to town and done their washing. Black-and-white beef heifer went today.



Friday, October 23, 1964

A beautiful day, on the cool windy side. We done up the housework. I washed up the kitchen floor again this morning. In p.m. Betty, Carmen and I called on Georgette and her three children. Also called at Fern and Lloyd’s. Came home, had supper. Betty and I to town.



Saturday, October 24, 1964 Pigs went

Fair day. Not too cold. I cooked an apple pie, squash pie, Indian pudding, rolls and beans. Bill worked in the barn. Billie butchered at Lawrence’s. Killed our two pigs. Betty and Joy and the children went to the B. H. S. Homecoming Day. 7- 0 for B. H. S. Fern up for supper. Betty and Mike out tonight. Joy went with them.
