The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 10 - 13, 1964

Tuesday, November 10, 1964

Clear and cloudy. Clear in a.m., clouded up in PM. To Portland with Fern and Lloyd. Fern got her new shoes. Also she did a little shopping (Christmas). We called at Charles Virgin's, had lunch there, came out to Zayre's, had a lunch at Deering's. Came home, had a good time. Bobby Smart began tearing the red barn down.

Wednesday, November 11, 1964 Snow

Clouded up and about 11:30 it began to spit snow. The ground got quite white, very cold all day. Rain mixed with snow. Cooked, churned in PM. Betty and I cleaned up the old playpen, gee looks some different. Fern, Lloyd called, Joy and two girls called. Bill put glass in window.

Thursday, November 12, 1964

Cloudy dreary all day, not very warm. I get a letter off to Dorothea and washed, defrosted refrigerator. Joy and girls called. Bobby worked a little on the old barn. Betty and Mike hunting.

Friday, November 13, 1964

Very mild. Nice sunny day. Worked on Christmas orders all day. Ronald and family here in p.m. Bill came home with a new car tonight, a 1957 green Ford. Very nice car. He and I with Carmen down to South Bridgton to see Mr. Schwartz about the car we are buying. He was the owner of it.
