The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 8 - 11, 1964


Tuesday, December 8, 1964

Well Betty and Mike got up happy. Today I cooked. Betty and I over to Norway, she did some Christmas shopping for Adair’s. I didn’t get much done. Very cold. Holly and children here in p.m.



Wednesday, December 9, 1964

Light snow flurries all day. Sun came out in late p.m. I washed curtains in living room and dining room. I washed living room windows and wood work. I got the clothes in, ironed tonight after supper. Got two Christmas cards. Betty to town in p.m. In evening Betty and Mike over to the Mart to do their Christmas shopping. Water at the barn frozen this morning.



Thursday, December 10, 1964

Mike home. A nice pretty day. He and Betty got their trees. I cleaned the two bedrooms.

Friday, December 11, 1964

Bill had to work tonight. It came on rainy and freezing. Carmen quite sick. Betty didn’t feel good, she and I to town. We got Dorothea’s box off. A mess here today. Washing, packing a box. Delores called.
