The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 5 - 7, 1976 Songo River Queen

Thursday, August 5, 1976 mostly sunny, KIMMEY TEETH

 

This is been a quite nice day. I done my regular work. Kimmy got her own breakfast. I did a little washing. Keith hauled the lumber for the toolshed. Betty took Kim to the dentist, she had three or four teeth pulled. Then they went to Dawn’s for rest of the day and to get Zak. Carmen went over to Kit Fosters to babysit in p.m. Tonight she is babysitting. Lee Pinkham called this evening. Kim up here again tonight. I worked on my papers and scraps today.

 

 

 

Friday, August 6, 1976 Songo River Queen

 

A fair day, it got cloudy in late p.m. Bill took me to town this afternoon. Kim up here all day. She likes to be all alone. Bill worked on the building they are making for the tractor. I picked some string beans. Betty and kids, Dawn and kids, Joy and kids all went on the Songo Riverboat today. Zak up here tonight. He is so pleased.

Saturday, August 7, 1976 RAIN

 

What a miserable old day. I done my regular work. Zak watched TV all morning. I did a dite of cooking. Betty, Joy and Dawn and all the kids except Zak went to the field day at Animal Refuge League in South Windham. After supper I went down to Betty’s a little while. It is so discouraging this rain now for two weekends. Zak has been very good.

August 1 - 4, 1976

Sunday, August 1, 1976 RAIN

 

Carlton leaves to go home today. He leaves Portland about seven and gets home for dinner in California. A miserable day. I did just my regular work. Changed the beds. Bill down to Walt’s to get the tax return form filled out. Billie relaxed and rested. Joy at Betty’s. I worked on my bills etc.

 

 

 

Monday, August 2, 1976 got a new Durham Calf tonight

 

It was nice and sunny when we got up, but it clouded up and we had heavy rain showers. I had just got a big wash out, it got wet. It dried just before supper and I got them in. Zak up here in a.m. Carmen up here for supper. Billie bought a new Shone Durham Calf from Lawrence tonight.

It has been a quite nice day. I washed and done some ironing in a.m., in p.m. Betty, Zak and I went up to Shaw’s and done the grocery shopping. I came home and done rest of the ironing.

 

 

 

Wednesday, August 4, 1976

 

A perfect day. It has been a beautiful day. I did some washing. We went to town and paid bills. Kim up here all day and tonight. I went to the band concert with Esther and Cliff, it was very good. Camp Encore and Coda both took part in the program. Robert not very good.

Thursday, July 29, 1976 DOROTHEA 39 TODAY, WALT AND BETTY’S 9th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

 

A quite nice day most of the day. On the mild side. I done up my regular work. Dusted, vacuumed all over the house. I went down to Betty’s. I was going to help make root beer, but she said not today. I helped Carmen to picked peas and beans. Laurie went home and Kimmy came back home. Bill didn’t do anything today, he don’t do much. Nothing to do. Dorothea had a nice day. Betty and Walt’s anniversary, they ate out.

 



 

 

 

 

Friday, July 30, 1976

 

Buddy left for Bermuda this morning. Joy took our car to take him to the airport. I done my regular work. Kim came up. Bill took me to town. I done my grocery shopping. Kathy here with Kim in p.m. They made some bread and a cake.

 

 

 

Saturday, July 31, 1976 cloudy and rain at times, CHICKS

 

So far what a weekend, cloudy and rain. I done up my work, made a chocolate cake. Billy went and got the pullets over to Harrison. They are a new breed, Brown and white. We left at almost 1:30 to go over to Carlton and Phyllis’s cottage for a cookout. Esther, (Cliff came later), Delores, Carlton, Phyllis and Amy. Robert, Joy and her girls, Debbie, Laurie, Kathy, Cindy, Billie Deming, Walt, Betty, Carmen, Kim, Zak and myself. We had a very nice meal. All seem to enjoy it all. A nice get-together. First time with Carlton and his family all except the two oldest girls. When we came home, called at Ferns. Billie up to Chet’s today. He is not too good.

Sunday, July 25, 1976 Windy

 

This is been a quite windy day and cold. I done regular work, washed. I picked the beans over we picked yesterday. Carmen was here and she helped. Kimmy was here a minute. Billie up to Chet’s. In evening we went down to Ferns. She and Lloyd are getting along quite well. Dorothea and Dave called, we gave her beans, eggs, milk and raspberries.

 

 

 

Monday, July 26, 1976

 

A quite nice day. I went down to Betty’s in a.m. In p.m. we went to Conway and North Conway, New Hampshire looking for table and chairs. Today Bill painted Betty’s kitchen floor. It looks very nice. Tonight Betty cooked their supper up here and ate up here. Lloyd and Fern alone today and got along okay.

 

 

 

Tuesday, July 27, 1976

 

Gone today to Portland. I got me some new shoes and Betty and Billie got me some for my birthday. They are nice shoes. I brought home a Kentucky Fried Chicken for supper. Kimmy went, she went to the teeth doctor. Also got her new school clothes. She was such a happy little girl.

I washed today. Zak up here. Betty and all hands gone down to South Windham to the Animal Refuge Farm for the day. Bill didn’t do anything today. In evening I went to the band concert with the Deming’s. Susan and family went too.
