The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 20 -22, 1976 Bits of Red Letter Days

Sunday, June 20, 1976

A real nice day, sunny and hot outside. I done my regular work and a dite of wash. It was late when I got my work done up. A kid from camp came down with Bill today. He had lunch here. Bill is better today. Dave and Dorothea came for Father’s Day. Bill got $30 and two pretty cards and two pretty shirts. Billie done some odds and end jobs. Lawrence called, he thinks the heifer will have her calf soon. Walt to Boston to see his brother. Had a prostate gland operation (cancer). Ed knew Dawn and Betty. Betty and kids down to Dawn’s today.

Monday, June 21, 1976 LLOYD, HUMID, CALF

It was cloudy in a.m. I didn’t wash. Bill went to work at camp, but came back not feeling very good. He went back, worked all p.m. I went down to the hospital with Betty, to be there while Lloyd was operated on. Esther, Fern, Betty and I. He came through all right and tonight is real good, looks good his color. I came home about 11:30, got lunch. Zak up here. Betty and I to town in p.m. to shop. Kim up here tonight. About 3 AM the heifer had her calf. Another bull. Red and white. Everything went okay. A big relief to know she has had it no trouble.

Tuesday, June 22, 1976 cloudy in a.m., NEW BIKE

It was cloudy in a.m. It cleared near noon. Kim was so tired, she slept until after 8:30. I defrosted my refrigerator. I did a big wash. I went to Conway with Betty, Zak, Kim and David Nevers. We bought Zak’s new bike at the bike shop there. He is so pleased with it. We are all very glad for him. Betty and kids down to Dawn’s all morning. The new calf is doing okay. Bill worked at camp all day.
