The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 28 - 30, 1976 Billie Deming Got a Car

Friday, May 28, 1976 HOT AT LAST, BILLIE DEMING GOT A NEW CAR

Today it has been hot which we have been looking forward to for such a long time. I got up early, done my work, down to Betty’s and we got ready and went to Dawn’s and picked her up and then we went to Portland. Stopped at Walt’s office and took his lunch to him. We went grocery shopping and got flowers for the cemeteries and my flower gardens. We got home quite early. Zak came up after supper to stay all night. After supper Betty, Kim, Zak and I took Carmen, Sue Spencer, Beth Doucette, Zenya, Debbie Sanderson to the Junior High dance. When we came home we took the flowers to the cemeteries. Today Billie Deming bought Chet’s old car. He is so happy and I am very pleased for him. He is a nice boy. I did a big ironing after supper.

Saturday, May 29, 1976 another nice hot day, CALF BORN

Up early, done up work. Zak was here and Kim came up. We had breakfast then Billie and I sat up the flowers in the gardens. We sure watched the cow all day too. Zak went over to play with Vince. Bill worked at the camp part of the day. Billie has been busy today. Late this p.m. the cow Josie gave birth to a nice dark red bull calf. We sure are so glad for her, she has been so uncomfortable for a long time. Also today Billie Deming called and showed us his new car. I’m so pleased about the boy.

Sunday, May 30, 1976 A BEAUTIFUL HOT DAY, PLANTED

It dawned hot and sunny. I got up and took my bath. Got breakfast, done up the work and got my wash to going. I didn’t get my dusting done until today. Bill and Billie planted the garden today. Betty called and asked if I wanted to go to a few barn sales with her. I did. Spencers up on the Ridge, two places over to Harrison, down to Naples. After he got home about 1:30 I had to finish my washing. It was late when I got it out but it dried good.
