The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 4 - 6, 1976 Bicentennial 200 years!

Sunday, July 4, 1976 200 YEARS OLD, a nice summer day, GOT HAY, Cow and Calf

This is been a big day. I done up my work. I packed a picnic lunch and made a salad for supper. Then I got ready to go to the parade with the Hortons. Fern went also. It was a very good parade. It was the Bicentennial celebration. This is the 200th anniversary of these United States. It was celebrated all over the country, on television too. Kim marched in the parade with the Girl Scouts. Today Billie got his hay all hauled. He got it up to Linscott’s. David and Bill helped him. Nice cool dry air today. Billie sold cow and calf Josie, hate to see her go.

Monday, July 5, 1976 Very Hot

A very nice HOT sunny day. I done regular regular work and my wash. Jack, Cindy, Carmen, Laurie, Betty and Walt called. Bill and Billie hauled rest of the hay from Ervin’s. Now the barn is full. Cliff and Christopher called and got some milk. I cleaned the cans inside and out. Billie wash them. We cleaned the cars all good today, they looked very nice. Walt and Betty invited us out to supper. We went down to Indianhead Drive-in down to Casco run by the Brackett girls. It was very nice. Chet came down today, Billie went up and got him.

Tuesday, July 6, 1976 Ed’s funeral

Down to Betty’s all day, also Fern was there. Also we done the big wash. Betty and I cleaned her upstairs before she went to the funeral. Edward J Babbitt. He was buried today in Cemetery in Portland. It was a big funeral Betty said. The Mack Truck Company was closed during the services. He is now out of his suffering. But poor Dawn will miss him so much. He was such a likable person. I wish he and Dawn could have had several more years together.
