The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 23 - 26, 1976 Hair Cuts Are Red Letter Days! Zak has Man's Haircut!!

 

Wednesday, June 23, 1976 A RED-HOT DAY

 

It has been another red-hot day. Very hot and humid. Betty to coffee group meeting in a.m., in p.m. she went to Dawn’s then S Portland to see Ed. He wasn’t at all good today. She didn’t get home until very late. She took the kids swimming and down to see Lloyd. I think she would be tired to death. She has been going so much. Lloyd quite upset tonight. I washed, ironed and busy all day. Zak here all p.m. and for supper. Carmen and Kim and Laurie home all day except when Laurie went over to Bob’s to picked berries. Zak likes his new bike very much. Bill worked at Camp Encore.

 

 

 

Thursday, June 24, 1976 HAIR CUTS

 

Today the best thing happen. Zak got a real good man’s haircut. He looks like a million. It will make him feel so much cooler. Also Kim had hers cut too. She looks good too. Those two kids have suffered so this hot weather. Billie home at noon, sick with the heat. He didn’t go back to work. Bill didn’t work today. He is better. Saltman went back home today is why he didn’t work. Vince down to Zak’s to play today. Zak was so pleased. This has been a wicked hot day.

 

 

 

Friday, June 25, 1976

 

Today it has been cooler, it has rained. I went to town and did my shopping. Bill didn’t work. Fern down to Betty’s for supper. Then they went to the hospital. I cleaned up my house and some extra jobs. Tonight Joy’s folks are coming up to Bob’s.

 

 

 

Saturday, June 26, 1976

 

A rainy miserable day. I done my regular work, down to Betty’s a little while. She has Joy’s two small children. I went to town, Joy’s folks got here about 9:30 last night.
