The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 10 - 13, 1976

Monday, May 10, 1976 nice day

This is been a nice sunny day, first all day of sunshine we have had for weeks. No clouds or showers. Esther got over here before 7 o’clock. She began to clean, at 9:30 the ceiling and walls were all done. We got the kitchen all done except the floor today. Betty will come up tomorrow and we will do the upper cupboards. The two men worked down on Betty’s pasture today. Fern and Esther took Lloyd’s cat over to the vets today and had a put to sleep.

Tuesday, May 11, 1976 a quite nice day

It has been a pretty good day, mild. A very slight haze all day. I did another big wash. Bedding, etc. Betty came up, we done the kitchen cupboards. I finished up a lot of loose ends in the kitchen. Bill harrowed the gardens. George and David worked at Betty’s today. Walt’s HEIFER came this noon.

Wednesday, May 12, 1976 RAIN

A very miserable day, it has rained so hard all day long. It cleared late in the p.m. I got the two bedrooms clean today. Betty helped a little while in p.m. in Billie’s room. Bill around all day, didn’t do much. Tonight Carmen has gone to the rock concert at LR High School. Betty had the Berry girls and Susan Foster up for supper.

Thursday, May 13, 1976

Sun has come up nice and clear when I got up this morning. I done the living room today with Fern and Betty’s help. It looks very nice after it was all done. Betty had to leave about 2:30 to get ready to go to Portland. She and Walt went to see the orthodontist about Kim’s teeth. Zak up for supper. Carmen played ball after school. Esther came over here last night. We went down to Betty’s and we got some greens. Bill had Bill Mitchell hauled dirt for the septic tank. Worked on it all day.
