The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 29 - 31, 1976

Thursday, July 29, 1976 DOROTHEA 39 TODAY, WALT AND BETTY’S 9th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

A quite nice day most of the day. On the mild side. I done up my regular work. Dusted, vacuumed all over the house. I went down to Betty’s. I was going to help make root beer, but she said not today. I helped Carmen to picked peas and beans. Laurie went home and Kimmy came back home. Bill didn’t do anything today, he don’t do much. Nothing to do. Dorothea had a nice day. Betty and Walt’s anniversary, they ate out.

Saturday, July 31, 1976 cloudy and rain at times, CHICKS

So far what a weekend, cloudy and rain. I done up my work, made a chocolate cake. Billy went and got the pullets over to Harrison. They are a new breed, Brown and white. We left at almost 1:30 to go over to Carlton and Phyllis’s cottage for a cookout. Esther, (Cliff came later), Delores, Carlton, Phyllis and Amy. Robert, Joy and her girls, Debbie, Laurie, Kathy, Cindy, Billie Deming, Walt, Betty, Carmen, Kim, Zak and myself. We had a very nice meal. All seem to enjoy it all. A nice get-together. First time with Carlton and his family all except the two oldest girls. When we came home, called at Ferns. Billie up to Chet’s today. He is not too good.
