The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 29 - May 2, 1976

 

Thursday, April 29, 1976 Zak

 

A better day, more sunshine, it also warmed up some. Betty took Zak to the specialists today.  Kim home today with another slight attack of asthma. She came up here while Zak and Betty went to Portland. She slept a lot. She stayed here all afternoon so as to be quiet. She slept nearly all p.m. I did another wash and a heaped up basket of ironing. Betty and Zak got home about one. We cleaned her bedroom and downstairs hall.

 

 

Friday, April 30, 1976 A LOT OF SUN

 

There has been a lot of sun today, but still some cloudy at times. This is been a bad week, after we got our rain for three days then it was cloudy most of the time. Not very warm either. Today we got Betty’s den, bathroom and little hall and living room all done. Fern and Esther helped today. Bill done a lot of errands for us. Also took me to town after supper. Kimmy went to school today, her asthma better. Carmen still has her back aches etc. Zenya over with Carmen tonight. Don Roaks came to check on the tractor mowing machine.

 

 

Saturday, May 1, 1976 A partly cloudy day

 

 In a.m. early it was sunny and bright then it got hazy. I did a wash anyway. The temp went up so they dried good. Kimmy here today, she was tired and was on the couch watching TV. About 11 she felt a little better, came out to the kitchen and made a cake and brownies. I washed the floor. Bill worked at camp. Billie went with Lawrence.

 

 

Sunday, May 2, 1976 fair day, temperatures mild

 

A nice day after it got cleared off. I did my wash. Clothes dried quite good. I figured out my bills etc. Bill and Billie worked on the lawn mowers, got them ready to go. Carmen called today. Zak came up leading the donkey, that is when the donkey want leading him. Carmen rode horseback. Bill took a afternoon nap. I picked a mess of dandelions this afternoon. Brud down to Delores’s weekend.
