The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, August 25, 1945

Raining. Finished hauling pulpwood. Called Mr. Newcomb tonight.



Sunday, August 26, 1945

Mama came home from Ferns. Dolores and Verna called. Nice day.



Monday, August 27, 1945

Washed. I went down to Ferns and picked 1 1/2 bushel string beans. Nice cool day.



Tuesday, August 28, 1945

We canned beans. Ironed and did a little cooking. Warmer. Brud left P. I. at 2 PM.



Wednesday, August 29, 1945

Hot. I cleaned up the house. Mr. Whitten the M. E. minister called in PM. Very hot. Dolores up in a.m. Bill and Raymond went swimming.



Thursday, August 30, 1945

Showers, heavy rain. But our surprise this morning: Bruddie came home for 15 day furlough. They killed Tony our dog.

Very hot. We did work. Bob hauled hen manure.



Sunday, August 19, 1945

Very hot. Bob hauled cow manure. Mama went down to Ferns. Uncle Os and family went to Raymond. Virgins.



Monday, August 20, 1945

I washed in p.m. Bill and Betty, Dorothea and I went to town in a.m. Very hot.



Tuesday, August 21, 1945

Very hot. Mr. Grover and Lazen (?)  worked. I made ice cream. I ironed.



Wednesday, August 22, 1945

Grover and boy worked in woods cutting pulpwood. Bill and Billie hauled out pulpwood. I did regular work, not so hot. Churned.



Thursday, August 23, 1945

I washed. Nice day. Bill and Billie hauled pulp. Mr. Grover and Lazen cut pulp. Telegram from Milan.



Friday, August 24, 1945

Still hauling pulpwood. Mr. Grover and Lazen worked. I did regular work. Cloudy. Got word Brud can’t come home. Going to Japan on Tuesday.

Very hot. We canned string beans for Kennard and ourselves. Milan gone back.

Very hot. Bill and Billie helped Lloyd to hay. Mama canned peaches.



Monday, August 13, 1945

We washed. Waited for news from Japan.



Tuesday, August 14, 1945

End of the war, three months six days from V-E day. It came at 7 PM. The world celebrated.



Wednesday, August 15, 1945

Holiday no. 1. Very nice day. We did regular work. Very happy war is over.



Thursday, August 16, 1945

Holiday no.2. Nice day we washed. Mr. Grover called. Billie took care of our dog socks.



Friday, August 17, 1945

Mr. Murray came $25. Bought 4 feed hoppers and three range shelters of Warren Chadbourne.

August 4 -10, 1945 First Atomic Bomb Dropped on Japan!

Nice day. Did regular work. Mama, Milan, and Uncle Sulmore called at Uncle Willis and Fern’s to see Auntie. Billie and Rayburn to show.



Sunday, August 5, 1945

They hayed up to Roberts. Dorothea went to show with Blanche and children.



Monday, August 6, 1945

We washed. Nice day. First atomic bomb dropped on Japan. Russia entered the war against Japan.



Tuesday, August 7, 1945

It rained. We cooked. Mama and Milan cleaned out Milan’s trunks. Bill and Rayburn went fishing.



Wednesday, August 8, 1945

We washed, iron, cooked, and washed floor. Nice day.



Thursday, August 9, 1945

I cleaned the house and wash the windows.



Friday, August 10, 1945

Very hot. 2300 chicks came. R.I. Reds. Finished up haying. Milan home all evening. Bob, Kennie, and Kennard called in eve.

They got in three loads of hay. Nice day. Billie went to town in eve. Finished up hauling logs.



Sunday, July 29, 1945

Raining. We moved some more chickens over. Goden, Sally, and Barbra called. Bill, Grover and Gordon went over to see Les Thomes.



Monday, July 30, 1945

Goden went to take physical. We washed. Bill and Ilan made a range shelter. Milan came tonight he looks good. Been overseas 7 months.



Tuesday, July 31, 1945

Did regular work. Moved some more chickens. Nice day.



Wednesday, August 1, 1945

Finished putting big chicks on the range. Mr. Murray camed drawed $50. Began to haul pulpwood today.



Thursday, August 2, 1945

Cleaned out chicken house for new chickens. Rayburn up. Milan and Kennie’s folks went fishing. Sugar stamps came.



Friday, August 3, 1945

We cooked. Nice day. Ilan finished work. Mama, Papa, and Milan up to Bob’s to supper.
