The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 9 - 15, 1945 Brud Graduates



Saturday, June 9, 1945

Quite a nice day. Bill and Bob did some pulverizing but it rained in p.m. Bill, Dorothea, and Betty and I went to town in a.m. $100 from Tony for pulpwood.



Sunday, June 10, 1945

Bill and Lloyd worked on the barn. Dorothea went to Sunday school with Fern. Mama went to Brud’s baccalaureate tonight’s. We found mother and kittens over to Aunt Linnie’s.



Monday, June 11, 1945

Rained most of the day. Cleared off in p.m. Hot. We got our tomato plants. We went over to Les Thomes. They began cutting timber for Thomes tomorrow.



Tuesday, June 12, 1945

A very good day. Bill and Goden planted potatoes. Fern and Lloyd up here and planted theirs. Gordon up here in eve. We washed. Auntie had a slight stroke.



Wednesday, June 13, 1945

Another good day. Bill and Goden planted the rest of the garden. I visited school this p.m. Jean got word George and David are freed.



Thursday, June 14, 1945

Brud’s graduation. Mama, Papa, Dorothea, Fern and I went. Goden and Bill finished planting. Guernsey had a bull calf. Lloyd and Fern up. She and I went down to Aunt.



Friday, June 15, 1945

Very hot. I washed. $50 from Tony for pulpwood yesterday. 1500 feet lumber came for floors in tie-up. Last day of school. L. birthday (Lloyds)
