The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 2 - 8, 1945



Saturday, June 2, 1945

Fair today. We washed. Our new dog came tonight from Portland by Chapman’s express. His name is Socks. I got new shoes.



Sunday, June 3, 1945

Lloyd and Bill put the brooders together. Fern came up for dinner. Fair weather. Thomes came to see about the timber.



Monday, June 4, 1945

We washed. Cold and cloudy. Papa down, other eye bad. I called Dr. Mabry for him. They cut pulp today.



Tuesday, June 5, 1945

Lloyd up tonight and worked on the barn from 7 to 10. It rained all day. Bill finished tearing down the silo. Didn’t cut pulp today.



Wednesday, June 6, 1945

1000 chicks came today. Rained by showers. Sam Gallanari with two trucks hauled pulp. Lloyd up tonight and helped haul pulp.



Thursday, June 7, 1945

We washed. Bill worked down in the woods. Fair day. Mrs. Harriet Pearie (?) died.



Friday, June 8, 1945

They finished hauling the pulp wood. Fair warm day. I cleaned up the house. I ironed. Mr. Murray called. Mother cat took her kittens away.
