The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 21 - 27, 1945



Saturday, April 21, 1945

Rosalie, Nancy, Dorothea and I cleaned the shed chamber. Bill and Billie painted. Billie got haircut.



Sunday, April 22, 1945

Very cold and windy. Bill and Billie fished. Fern and Lloyd called in p.m. Bill, Dorothea and I went down to Jean’s.



Monday, April 23, 1945

25° above, cold. We washed regular washing. Kennard finished up at the shipyard today. He and Dolores up a few minutes. Bill and Goden went to Fryeburg. Bill and I went up to Ilan’s.



Tuesday, April 24, 1945

A little warmer. Bill, Betty and I went to town. Turned the cows into the pasture for first time. Billie mowed the lawn for first time tonight.



Wednesday, April 25, 1945

Raining today. I started on kitchen. Russians have Berlin completely enuriled (?) tonight. Billie over to Aunt Linnie’s in eve. Bill and I went to town today.



Thursday, April 26, 1945

I finished cleaning the ceiling in kitchen and cleaned the paint. (?) Rained all day.



Friday, April 27, 1945

Rained hard all day. Bill, Ilan and I went to the State Street Hospital in Portland and got Minnie. She wasn’t very well.
