The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 19 - 25, 1945



Saturday, May 19, 1945

Bill and Ilan worked on car. Mr. Murray the hen man came today we are getting ready for chickens. Went down to Ferns and to Henry Watkins. Cleared off tonight. Ilan gone to Sweden.



Sunday, May 20, 1945

IT DID NOT RAIN TODAY. A very good day, but cloudy tonight. Lloyd, Ilan, Bill and Billie worked on the shop to move it over.



Monday, May 21, 1945

Bill, Ilan and Goden with Bills and Hyad’s tractors moved the shop over. Cloudy. Milan’s outfit on way to Pacific. It’s Gen. Hodges 1st U.S. Army. Alby Grover and Dick Brooks began to pulp wood.



Tuesday, May 22, 1945

I did a big wash. Nice day. Bill and Ilan leveled up the little barn.



Wednesday, May 23, 1945

I ironed. Cleaned up the house. Bill and Ilan finished the shop for the cows. Went into tonight for the first time. Cold today. Lloyd started on chicken house.



Thursday, May 24, 1945

Fair today kind of cold. I called at Minnie’s in a.m. Bill and Ilan jacked up the barn. Lloyd up again to work on tie-up.



Friday, May 25, 1945

Bill and Ilan worked on tie-up. Fair day. Stan Hall came and bought the three cows.
