The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 16 - 22, 1945 Carkie Wounded



Saturday, June 16, 1945

Bill and Ilan worked on the barn. Fair day. I had some very good beans and rolls for supper. Goden and Sally Porter married tonight.



Sunday, June 17, 1945

Lloyd up here all day and worked. Rainy today. Charlie and Jean up, Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis came. Goden took our car. Ilan worked here today.



Monday, June 18, 1945

I washed. Showers. Auntie not so well. Mr. Murray came and bought 500 chicks. Ilan worked up here today. Bill and Dorothea down to Jeans in eve.



Tuesday, June 19, 1945

Churned, went to town. Bill’s income tax check came. Lloyd up here in eve and worked. Fern and I called on Auntie.  Dolores got word Carkie wounded.



Wednesday, June 20, 1945

Brud came to say goodbye rained hard all day. Bill and Billie finish the small brooder room. Rayburn up all day and night. Lila and Aunt Ava called in eve. Mama and Aunt Ava up to Uncle Willis. We get 10 pounds of red kidney beans at Lawrence Howards.



Thursday, June 21, 1945

I cleaned up the house nice day. Baked beans. Lloyd worked up here in eve. Fern and I went down to Auntie’s.



Friday, June 22, 1945

I churned. Nice hot day. I washed. Mama came up from Aunties and spent the day. Dolores got a card from Brud, two from Carlton and one from Gov. None from Milan.
