The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 20 - 23, 1967


Thursday, April 20, 1967

Sun was shining today. Not too warm. Bill worked on the house, didn’t get too much done as it was too cold and windy up there. I got my hair set this p.m. Fern and Lloyd called this a.m.



Friday, April 21, 1967

A nice mild day. I washed, cleaned windows and curtains in kitchen. Done regular work. Carmen good all day. I walked up to the house, they got the stud up for the walls today. Mr. Davis called to see us in p.m. He was agreeable about us renting his house. Jim Graffam, Kennard and Lloyd called while they were working on the house. Bill and I to town in evening. Mike here in evening, brought deed over.
 


Saturday, April 22, 1967

Rain most all day. Bill and Gordon worked some on the house. Bill and I down to Betty’s. Bill and I called at Dorothea’s. Baby good. They got along fine. Later in p.m. they came up here for supper, brought Kim up to stay. They took Carmen to the circus with them. Also Larry, David’s brother. Fern here for supper. 




Sunday, April 23, 1967 

Cleared today. Bill worked on the house with Gordon in a.m. then in middle of forenoon we got ready, went to North Windham.

April 15 - 19, 1967


Saturday, April 15, 1967

Rain. No work on the house. Gordon came up, he and Bill went down, got some plastic to cover the plywood over. Lawrence Boynton called. Bill and I took Carmen down, she got her hair cut today. Betty left the kids here and she has gone off somewhere. Mike here in p.m. to see his daughter’s. Carmen was very glad to see him. Kim was asleep.



Sunday, April 16, 1967 SNOW

Got up this morning and the ground was white with about 6 inches of snow. Bill called out to work. Betty and Carmen came up.  In late p.m. Thomas family came. Had a birthday cake, ice cream and gifts to celebrate Kim’s first birthday which was the 12th.

Very miserable day. I washed, no work at the house. Jeff here this morning. Betty came up, she went up and helped on the house. Mr. Stanford called with some furniture to put in the barn. Betty and kids here for supper.

April 11 - 14 1967 Kimberly turns 1


Tuesday, April 11, 1967 Windy

Run the cement today. A very very cold windy day. I done up my work. Betty brought the kids up. Mrs. Carter called to see Betty. I cooked a little. Done my ironing. Today they got the cement run today for the cellar. It was so awful cold and windy. I ironed.



Wednesday, April 12, 1967 Kimberly Allie Boutilier 1 year old

Still cold and windy, a pretty sunny day. I done up my work, and got Kim to bed early in the forenoon. Fern and Lloyd called. Betty and Carmen came. We went down to Dorothea’s and to Bradlee’s and got some birthday gifts for Kim. They took the forms down late this P.M. On the cold side. Bill and I down to put Betty’s mailbox up.



Thursday, April 13, 1967 Began construction work on the house

A very nice day, temperature when we got up was 20 above. It soon warmed up. I washed. Gordon came up, he and Bill got everything set out and ready to go to work on the house. They got the underpinnings all up. Betty and Carmen came up. Fern and Lloyd called up to the lot. Jim Graffam, Kennard, Dorothea and Jeff and Jean and Mrs. Brock Clark. Everyone likes the lot.



Friday, April 14, 1967

A nice day, warm. It got cloudy in late p.m. Bill and Gordon got a lot of things done on the house today. Got the (?) stringers on. Betty brought Carmen up and Kim was here. She has gone away. In evening Dorothea and family called.

April 7 - 10, 1967


Friday, April 7, 1967

Cloudy and snow flurries. NT Fox man called about windows. Betty didn’t go to Portland with Kim because of the snow. The proofs came back today for Betty to look at, pick from. Fern and Lloyd took me down. Carmen came home with me, she stayed rest of the day and going to stay all night. Bill and I to town. Carmen stayed home with Billie.



Saturday, April 8, 1967

I got up, done my work up early. Billie up and down town to the garage. Ground all white. I hate this mess of old snow. It cleared off and was sunny. Had a good supper. Fern, Betty and kids up.



Sunday, April 9, 1967

We awoke this morning to a nice sunny morning. Kim stayed here last night. I done up my work. Bill down to Gordon’s. Betty and Carmen came up. Bill and I got ready, went down to Dorothea and Dave’s for dinner. We had a good dinner, went out for a ride. Jeff didn’t go. Betty came down to Dorothea’s also. Rest of the snow went today.



Monday, April 10, 1967 No work today on the house lot

Sunny, after a cloudy rainy morning. As the day come on it got cold and windy. I washed. Had the lines all full. Betty and girls called. Betty feeling much better today. I got the clothes in. They didn’t dry very good. The AFTRA strike of radio and TV ended tonight.
