The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 18 - 21, 1967


Saturday, March 18, 1967

Three below zero this morning, very cold. I done up my work. Took care of Kim. Betty called, she and Carmen came up with Mike. Got Kim and took him back to Auburn. He and the children glad to see each other. Bill over to Norway after he got through work to do business. Billie gone with Lawrence. Fern, Lloyd called. Mr. and Mrs. Stanford came and brought some things to put into the barn. Pat and Peter Thompson came with them. Kim back home tonight.



Sunday, March 19, 1967

A nice sunny day. Got up about 9:30 AM. Got my work done. Bill went down to Betty’s. Billie didn’t get up very early. Bill washed his jacket. Dorothea and family called after they had gone to church. In p.m. Betty and kids came up. In p.m. Billie, Carmen and I with Fern and Lloyd all went for a long ride down through Porter, Kezar Falls, Baldwin and Sebago.



Monday, March 20, 1967 0° this morning

A nice clear day. I washed. Done regular work, cooked some. After supper Bill and I went down to Betty’s. I was alone all day. My clothes dried good. I got them in before supper.



Tuesday, March 21, 1967

10 above this morning. A real like March morning. I done up my work. Washed all my downstairs windows. Wrote Esther’s letter. Ironed. Betty brought Carmen and Kimberly up. She had an appointment with a doctor in Portland. I had a roast pork supper. Bill called on Dorothea, also she had Sarah and Lorraine, Fern and Lloyd. Only in the upper 20s today. Billie helping Wesley get some cattle down to Sebago tonight.
