The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 31, 1966 Dorothea and David Marry, Year End Events Summary

Saturday, December 31, 1966 DOROTHEA AND DAVID

A nice day. Today has been a very busy day for Dorothea and David. Making the last minute preparations for their wedding which is to be at one minute past midnight tonight. A courtship of two months and 30 days. It has been a full courtship for them. Billie up to Chet’s. He had some bacon brought home today, very good. Dorothea and David here for dinner and supper. Betty and Carmen home in PM. End of 1966. Events of 1966 in following pages:

On January 22 of this year we got a blow. A call from Dorothea. She and Dennis had separated. Have been ever since last September. Betty and Mike separated for one year on August 23.
Kimberly Allie Boutlier born April 12, 1966 at the “new” Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital at 10:50 AM. Mike and I with her all night (Betty.) Betty entered the hospital at 9:45 PM April 11.
There are many events of this past year. The first and a very sad one is the very sudden death of our beloved brother Kennie. He died December 21 at the Osteopathic Hospital in Portland. He had been hemorrhaging all day, was rushed to hospital, in the meantime had three heart strokes, the fourth one fatal. We never will forget you Kennie. You will be with us in our minds and memories.

On April 12 a sweet little girl came into our lives. Kimberly Allie Boutilier. She was born in Northern Cumberland Hospital. Mike, her father and Betty’s husband and I was there. It was 12 hours after Betty got there she was born. A sad event is we have discovered in her very short life of today she has a serious heart condition which has caused her to be in and out of the hospital several times. We hope after tests in the next month she will be able to go through open-heart surgery and be able to live a normal life.

Also a blow came to Dorothea and Jeffrey. Dennis moved out and left them which caused them much heartache and suffering. On June 20 of this year Dorothea divorce Dennis. I made a trip out to Michigan to help Dorothea. I also visited at Esther’s. On July 12 Dorothea, Jeff, Mandy and I arrived home. It was a very hard blow for Dorothea and Jeff. They gave up a once a very happy life which will not be very happy memories for them.

Also our second daughter Betty went through the same. She and the girls gave up a happy precious life they once enjoyed with Mike. It was so hard for Betty to give him up. I think way down deep for her she still cherishes her happiness and other memories she once had with him and always will. Same with Dorothea and Jeffrey.

Also another event, we have received a down payment on our house and we will be leaving it come the spring. Also the trailer was sold during the year.
