The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 17 - 20, 1967 Kim Has Surgical Procedure

Tuesday, January 17, 1967

Cloudy in a.m. I got my clothes out and then the sun came out. It was mild and clothes dried good. I got them in after supper. Aunt Ava called and paid for her flowers. Betty and Carmen came up in PM, were here for supper. Betty picked up some of the things in the shed chamber. I made two pies. Our nice MILD weather is to end tonight.

Wednesday, January 18, 1967 KIMBERLY

18 above when we got up this morning. I rushed to get my work done early. Betty and Carmen came and at 7:30 we left for the Maine Medical Center. On the way we stopped at Dorothea’s to leave Carmen. We saw Dr. Matthews, Kimberly’s doctor. He is a child heart specialist. He said Kim went through the test all well and good. She had a incision on her leg and arm. She was upstairs undergoing the test for four hours. She didn’t know us. It was awful to see her like that. Will tell us about it tomorrow.

Fern, Betty and I to North Windham. Fern and I stayed there with Carmen while Dorothea and Betty went to see Kim. She was much better than yesterday Betty said. She can come home tomorrow. Betty and Carmen here for supper.

Friday, January 20, 1967 KIMBERLY HOME

Again Kimberly came home from the Maine Medical Center hospital in Portland. She is so white and is quite rattled when she breathes. She is a sweet baby. We called at Dorothea’s. Also at Jeans, she was so pleased to see her. Also called for her great-grandmother Thelma Briggs to see her. She was so pleased to see them. Betty and girls here for supper.
