The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 5 - 8, 1967

Thursday, January 5, 1967

A fair day, on the warm side. I did a wash. Done up my housework, made a cake. Betty came and got the kids Carmen and Kim at noon. She got up bad headache. We went down after supper and got the two children as she had to go to work at six in the morning. They are here for all night.

Friday, January 6, 1967 David and Dorothea Home

A beautiful day. I done up my work. Betty and kids here all day. In early p.m. Dorothea and Dave got home from their honeymoon. A trip up to Canada and back through Vermont calling on his sister and family and aunt and grandmother. They had a very nice time. Both very HAPPY. They left after supper to go home. It did my heart good to see Jeff so very HAPPY going to his new home with two people he loves. Another adjustment he has got to make.

Saturday, January 7, 1967 Betty got glasses

Cloudy all day. It began to snow in late p.m. The storm wasn’t too bad here as it went North East out to sea before it hit Maine. Just an inch or so of snow. I went down to Betty’s in a.m. with the kids while she worked. In p.m. she, Carmen and I to Norway. Came home, had a early supper. Bill and I here alone. Billie had to help Lawrence. Joy and family left for their new home in Rhode Island.

Sunday, January 8, 1967

A cloudy dreary day. Bill called out at 5:45 AM. He worked until noon. I didn’t get up very early. Fern and Lloyd called and stayed until about 2 PM. We called at Betty’s, took some things down. Then Bill and I called at Gordon’s. A much different Sunday. No Kennie and Dot. No grandchildren here all day. I got a letter written to Es and Milan. Bill and I called at Gordon and Sal’s in p.m.
