The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 6 - 9, 1967


Monday, March 6, 1967 Town Meeting, Gordon elected Selectmen

I washed, not too cold. Is snowed some. I had a big wash. Betty busy getting details taken care of about her new house. I went down with her. Sally picked me up and I went up to vote at town meeting. Randy called at Betty’s today. Betty down to her house tonight.



Tuesday, March 7, 1967

Cloudy and snow, we got about 8 inches. Betty, kids and I went down to their house. We got home then got stuck out here in our yard. I made a pie and cake. Baby slept all afternoon. Betty got her phone in today, also they got the water turned on at her home. Clothes still frozen on the clothes line.



Wednesday, March 8, 1967 Betty, Carmen and Kim moved into their new home today

Nice and clear after the big storm of yesterday. I got my clothes in and ironed. Cleaned up all the house after Betty and kids moved home. Bill got her car out. They left about 10 AM for their new home. Furnace didn’t work, they were so cold. Mr. Field came and fixed it. Bill and I called after supper, took a curtain down and some other things. Billie up to Chet’s in evening. Chet lost a nice big Holstein cow. Kim fussy.



Thursday, March 9, 1967 0° this morning

A nice day. It warmed up during the day. I washed. Betty and girls here. I done regular work. In evening Bill and I went down to Betty’s and Bill put up the rods for her clothes closets. Billie up and got a haircut tonight. I went down and stayed at Ferns. Kennard called today. Delores not too good.
