The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 22 - 25, 1967


Tuesday, August 22, 1967

A very nice day. I washed. On the hot side. Betty and Holly and their kids gone on a picnic. Carmen had such a good time. I washed. Dorothea and Marguerite called and Jeff in PM. They got some plants for Marguerite. Back screen door came. Gordon up tonight. Betty and Walt here in evening. Helen Smart called in a.m.





Wednesday, August 23, 1967 A Beautiful Day

Got up and the sun was shining, clear, cool and bright. I done up my work. Betty called, got to go to Concord to take some papers up. I went with her. A very pretty ride. Saw the house she and Walt want to buy. It is beautiful. Came home late, had car trouble. Bill mad. I got supper, down to Ferns while Billie got his haircut. Carm and Kim up here tonight.



Thursday, August 24, 1967 Billie to Acton Fair, Bet and Walt got a loan today

Sunny and clear this morning. I done up my work, got the kids up. Had breakfast. I cleaned up the house, washed. Dorothea and Jeff called in p.m. Dorothea borrowed my Airways sweeper to do her rug. Betty up to New Hampshire today, went to the monastery with Walt. They got the loan on their house. Joe Hatch up after supper and worked on the driveway. Billie gone to the fair. Bet and Walt came about 8:30. Kids and I called at Stanford’s.



Friday, August 25, 1967 nice day

Another one of those nice days except there was early morning fog which soon disappeared. Joe Hatch and crew came and worked on the driveway and garage. Kids here for a while while Betty was shopping. Joy and family came tonight. Bill hurt his hand tonight.

Friday, August 18, 1967 HOT AND HUMID, Christie better

I done up work, washed, defrosted refrigerator, ironed, figured etc. Kids still here. Betty back to New Hampshire with Walt. Delores called this morning. Christie better today.

Saturday, August 19, 1967

A nice day. I baked beans. Betty and Walt up. Betty took me to town to do my shopping. Billie and Walt washed and cleaned the cars. Bill shingled. Had a good supper. Horton’s here. I had the kids last night. Billie lame. Betty and Walt found a house they are interested in.



Sunday, August 20, 1967

Kind of cloudy, some light showers. Billie lame in his arm. We had a steak dinner. The Horton’s went for a nice long ride today. Not much company today.



Monday, August 21, 1967

I washed. A very nice day after yesterday. I made a blueberry pie. Minnie went to the hospital this morning. I called on her before she left. Kennard called in the evening.

August 14 - 17, 1967


Monday, August 14, 1967 Nice Day

A very nice day. I did a big wash. I have Carmen and Kim. Betty gone to New Hampshire to find a place to live, went with Walt early. I have the puppy. She has been sick all day. Late tonight they came for her. Had a shower at night or after supper. Billie harrowed garden. Gordon up and did some more wiring.

Tuesday, August 15, 1967

A beautiful day, I done up my work. Betty and kids came up. Betty and Holly took Heidi to the vets, Dr. Gauger. She has distemper. She came home, took the kids home. Mike came over to see them tonight. I saw him. He looked very nice. Betty and Walt had a nice evening. Betty had her puppy put to sleep tonight. Ruth Ann Whitney and friend looked at Betty’s house to buy.



Wednesday, August 16, 1967 Christie sick

A nice sunny day, quite high. Betty, kids and I to New Hampshire to look for a place to live. Saw Walt out to his place where he works. Came home, had a cold supper. Christie sick. Billie and I took her to the vets at Dr. Gauger’s. He gave her a distemper shot. We are very worried about her tonight. Washed some things. Bill and Gordon wired some more.



Thursday, August 17, 1967 Sunny

Another nice day, hotter than yesterday. I have the two little girls here. Christie is better this morning, today she was out with us and like her old self. Dorothea and Marguerite and Jeff here. They went to HE Burnham auction. Jeff stayed here. Christie better tonight. Betty and Walt didn’t get home until real late. Did a big wash again.

A nice day. Hot. I cleaned up my stove, the house. Lloyd called. Gordon came up and measured for electric plug boxes. Betty and girls here, we washed and picked over some papers. In evening I called at Ferns while Billie got haircut. Gordon up in evening and put in electric plugs. Betty got her last check from Mike.



Friday, August 11, 1967

The first clear cool dry day for over two months. I made out some checks and paid some bills. They bulldozed out the driveway today. Betty and children here. In evening Billie took me to town. Gordon up and done some wiring after supper. Norman and Barbara called. Also Betty and Walt came up and brought Kim up to stay all night.



Saturday, August 12, 1967

I did some cooking, cake, lemon sponge pie, baked beans, rolls and Brown bread. Thomases and Hortons here for supper and Fern. They all liked their supper very much.



Sunday, August 13, 1967

Fair in early part of the day. The Thomas family gone up to Andover to Telstar. Billie worked for Lawrence. Fern, Lloyd called. Betty, Walt and kids came later. Brought kids up to stay all night. Betty going to Concord in morning with Walt to look for a place to live. Bob here in evening.
