The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 31, 1975 Year in Review

Wednesday, December 31, 1975

A very nice mild day, got colder. We done up the work. I made a squash pie. Carmen and I worked on the puzzle in evening. Betty up for a little while, just to get some water. Carmen came up after her company went home. They had rode the horses. Carmen and I sat up late or till the new year came. We worked on the puzzle. Betty, Zak and Kim down to Dawn’s sledding. Bill took me to town shopping. I ironed and done a dite of washing.

Well another year has come and gone. It was not too bad a winter and not too much snow. Some cold days and bad storms. Billie had problems the first winter with his barn. Moisture trouble. He bought a dehumidifier, two fans and nothing helped much until the warm spring days came along.

Bill has had lawyers help all winter securing his title and coming in possession of his nice lot of land Jean left him by her will. With Walt’s help, guidance, and suggestions and advice Bill finally came in possession of the lot March and April. Walt helped him to sell it and it was sold and he got most all of his money and a mortgage on the lot for the remainder, in early December. Bill paid Walt back for the money he borrowed of him. Also has it in the savings bank.

Carmen to hospitals for x-ray in early February. All came out negative.

Ilan and Minnie and Randy Smart moved into their new home early this year. They had opened house, many friends and neighbors called. They have a very pretty brand-new home.

This past year Billie had a calf born here on the’s place, it was February 12. It was a wicked cold spell of weather. Had to get a heater to put in the barn. Betty was up here the night she was born. Carmen made the Honor Roll at school and very pleased. In March Bill got his property and his land to sell or do anything you wanted, it has been a whole year since it has been going.

Esther went to the Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital for a tumor operation. She came through okay, no malignancy which is the best. Hope she will pick up again as time goes on. Hasn’t much yet. Fern has had a lot of trouble with her feet this past year, they are in terrible condition. Kennard’s condition is getting worse in early spring. He continued to get worse as the summer wore on. Got very thin and weak and in October of this year he went to the hospital where he died about two months after entering. December 1, 1975 at 12:45 AM. Also this past year Robert was in serious condition and in and out of the hospital several times.

Kimmy became a Girl Scout this past year, Carmen left the Girl Scouts.

I got a brand-new electric stove this past year. Bill bought a new car of Joy’s. We got the water piped up here from the spring. Joy and her family left in middle of August for Bermuda to join Buddy for three years. In July of this year Billie bought a used Farmall tractor. Dorothea and David separated a couple times. Jeff dropped out of school.

Bicentennial year is coming up, freedom train came in to Portland which many people visit. Carmen got a brand-new 10 speed bike and Zenya got one. Kimmy to the Maine Medical Center for heart check up. Possibly she will have another operation next summer. Wanda Jean Harmon and Fred Thompson married in April of this year. They had a son born in October.

Betty to hospital with ear trouble. This year the war ended. We had an extremely HOT summer. Dorothea graduated from nursing training and became a (blank)

We lost two nice neighbors this past year. Sudden death Ralph Vose and Howland Downey. Also our beloved brother Kennard. Bill to the hospital for examination, eyes etc. In the fall he got quite bad eyes. Lil Edson died in early fall, a close friend of this family. We got a Social Security raises past year. Carmen had the horse Angel bread to a palomino. She will be having her colt in May 1976

At the end of this year we all had a very nice Christmas. All the family. David was still with us. Also Esther and Cliff had their Christmas in Eustis, Florida. They left November 1. After a very hard summers work in the extreme heat for Cliff, they have had a very enjoyable winter. Chet to hospital in early December. For the winter, he is in a nursing home.

AMEN!
