The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 26 - 29, 1975

Friday, September 26, 1975

 

What a day. Rain rain. In a.m. Bill and I went to town and done up the shopping. Dorothea came up in p.m. and stayed for supper. We was very glad to see her. She looks so nice after losing all the weight. She looked very pretty. After Betty got home we went down there for a little while. Betty went down to Dawn’s today.

 

 

 

Saturday, September 27, 1975 STOVE

 

A quite nice day. I dite of sun. Early in the morning we got some rain. Billie got the pipe etc. and fixed the water fountain in the barn. Kimmy was here. I did some cooking, made a macaroni and cheese for supper. Kimmy went home and Zak came up and here for supper. Betty, Walt and girls went down to Dawn’s and got the old cookstove we used to have, back. It looks good to see it there.

Sunday, September 28, 1975 FRYEBURG FAIR

 

A quite nice day. I got my work done and then we got ready and went to Fryeburg Fair. Temperature was mild. No rain for the day. Betty and Walt asked us. The kids had a good time. Fern and Lloyd called this evening. They stayed a long while. This is been the first good day for several days.

 

 

 

Monday, September 29, 1975

 

A beautiful day. It was very mild and sunny all day. It seemed good. I washed and went down to Betty’s. George came and worked on the chimney. Betty down to Dawn’s to help find Buttons. They found her out in the woods. Billie began to haul manure tonight.
