The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 30 - December 2, 1975 Kennard Died

Sunday, November 30, 1975

It has been cloudy all day. I couldn’t wash. Done up the regular work. Defrosted refrigerators. Bill didn’t do a thing all day. Billie up to Chet’s. Called hospital. Kennard very low but still living. They didn’t do away with Chet’s dog. Betty and I went down to the hospital early this evening. Verna came today for a few days.

Monday, December 1, 1975 Kennard died at 12:45 AM

We, Betty, Verna and I, stayed at the hospital all last night and at 12:45 this morning Kennard died very peacefully. No more suffering for him. He was a very kind, honest and decent man. From the beginning his life was unjust and unkind. He raised two very smart and honorable sons which was his only blessing in his life. He was a smart man. Shy and timid. His life at home in childhood was hard. He took to drink and with his wife, who never did or was able to make him happy. His life was insecure. Although I know and do hope he had some happy moments. We will miss him so much. We all loved him.

Tuesday, December 2, 1975 Bill SS $198.40 Althea SS $85.78

A quite nice day. I went down to Betty’s early, we got ready and went to Portland. Dorothea went with us. We all did a lot of Christmas shopping. Dorothea got so tired. We didn’t get home until very late. Ate the fried chicken I bought. Got ready, went down to get Fern. We went down to the funeral parlor. We was so pleased to see Kennard resting so peacefully. I hope where he is now he isn’t shy or timid when he meets people. I hope he is now happy, well and contented. We all loved him and he will be missed by us all.
