The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 27 - 30, 1975

Monday, October 27, 1975 clear, heavy frost, Veterans Day

This morning we had our first heavy frost. We have had to before but just light. This grass has been very green and many leaves are still green. Up to now. Was at Betty’s, we cleaned her house all up and it looked good. In evening Dorothea came up. She and Bill went down to see Kennard. He is not at all good.

Another very nice day, very mild. I went to town with Betty, then we made applesauce. Fern helped. She had several bushels, it was a big job.

It was clear in a.m. but it clouded up. I did a big day’s work. I went down to Betty’s to see Kimmy dressed up in her new Girl Scout uniform. I washed, a big one. I did a big ironing. Cooked a chicken dinner. We had Esther and Cliff over for supper. In late p.m. Carlton called and Esther and a surprise, DELORES. They had been down to see Kennard. Carlton looks very good. Kennard is not at all good and he is very home sick. Betty to her coffee group in a.m. Dawn called on her in p.m. Burnham Brothers from Naples came to make an estimate on clearing the land.

It was mild and warm when we got up. It soon began to get cooler and by noon it was very cold and snow flurries in some parts of the state. Got ready early and went up to Conway to Ames store with Betty. She got coats for Kim and Zak. I got some new everyday shoes.
